Our team is international and based across South America, the Pacific Islands, Asia, and North America, with a large contingent at our Seattle headquarters. We speak many languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and a wide range of Indigenous Peoples’ languages.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Social Media Manager will coordinate and manage Nia Tero’s voice and brand across social platforms, crafting content and visuals that amplify our mission and values. This includes elevating narratives about Indigenous Peoples’ guardianship and sharing stories where Indigenous rights, social justice, and environmental stewardship intersect. Reporting to the Director, Communications, this role will shape and implement social media strategies, engage audiences through day-to-day platform management, and creatively expand our reach. 
 
We’re looking for a dynamic, tenacious individual who thrives on collaboration, loves experimenting with new creative approaches, and understands cultural nuance. This person will grow our existing platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook), explore emerging ones, lead impactful campaigns, and support Nia Tero’s presence at key global convenings. Ideal candidates will excel in writing, multi-media content creation, and community-building, have skills in Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools, and an ability to use data to optimize strategy and engagement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Social Media Strategy & Management

  • Co-develop and execute global social media strategies that advance Nia Tero's mission, aligning campaigns with organizational priorities and values.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with social media platforms, organizations, grantees, allies and influencers to amplify Nia Tero’s reach and impact.
  • Stay informed about current social media trends, new tools, and strategies for utilizing platforms and content to optimize our efforts while engaging and growing target audiences.
  • Grow Nia Tero’s presence on existing platforms, while providing research, recommendations, and proposed strategies to launch Nia Tero’s presence on new platforms.

Content Development

  • Create compelling and timely social content and copy, ensuring accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and alignment with Nia Tero’s mission and impact goals.
  • Produce and edit social-first graphics, visuals, and videos independently or in partnership with designers and the production team that is optimized for campaigns, films, and other initiatives.
  • Develop, distribute, and manage social and impact campaign distribution toolkits.
  • Cover regional and global events, collaborating with cross-organizational teams and external partners to highlight the impact of initiatives and role of Indigenous partners.

Audience Development & Engagement

  • Enhance audience engagement and build Nia Tero’s audience base by monitoring and analyzing social media performance, and providing actionable insights and recommendations to refine strategies and audience responsiveness.
  • Provide active and responsive management of social media messages, comments, and shares, staying on top of news and trending topics, and amplifying our Indigenous partners' voices.
  • Manage rapid crisis responses across social media channels.
  • Collaborate closely with Director, Communications and key stakeholders to develop and implement paid social and advertising strategies.

PEOPLE AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Resources: As needed, this position will manage external contractors and agencies for asset development, design, productions, and paid campaigns.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Requirements

  • 3+ years of social media experience and/or digital communications.
  • Proven track record managing high-visibility branded social accounts, inclusive of Instagram, LinkedIn, or video-first platforms, demonstrating the capacity to build, engage, and activate audiences through platform-specific strategies and content development.
  • Demonstrated experience developing social strategies and campaigns, and successfully growing social audiences and engagement through these strategies.
  • Experience with hands-on social media content creation, including static graphics and videos.
  • Knowledge of scheduling and creative tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and Sprout.
  • Experience using project and asset management tools, such as Asana and Sharepoint.
  • Experience with social media monitoring and analytics reporting, using analytics tools to inform social media strategy, content development, and audience engagement.
  • Experience managing influencer relationships and providing real-time social media coverage at live events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Deep familiarity with social media and best practice, and enthusiasm about audience development.
  • An eye for detail, with excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and copy-editing skills.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills.
  • Comfort and resourcefulness on camera for social-first videos, interviews, and event coverage.
  • High level of cultural fluency, with an ability to understand, respect and respond to sensitive cultural nuances associated with working alongside Indigenous Peoples globally.
  • Ability to move projects forward autonomously, while remaining in alignment with organizational goals, messaging, and strategies.

Ideal

  • Working knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese.
  • Experience with global organizations and frameworks.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples.


WORKING CONDITIONS AND TRAVEL

This full-time position is ideally based in Seattle, with flexibility to work some evenings and weekend hours as needed. Occasional day and night domestic travel and international travel have potential (up to 15%).

The hourly salary for this position is USD $41.83 hourly/ $87,000 annually -$46.64 hourly/$97,000 annually based on experience. Our compensation program is U.S. based and pay ranges are representative of compensation in the U.S. market. For positions outside of the U.S., pay rates are determined based on the applicable local regional market.

This is a full-time permanent position and qualifies for healthcare benefits (medical, dental and vision), 401K and paid time off (including vacation leave, sick leave, and personal days).
